Forum 2: Pronouns Matter

Description

Pronouns are used every day; whether you are writing or speaking, they naturally take the place of the nouns to avoid repetition. We often use them without thinking about it. Often when speaking of someone in the third person, these pronouns have a gender implied. These associations are not always accurate or helpful.  Mistaking or assuming someone’s gender is a common mistake. Using someone’s correct gender pronoun is one of the most basic ways to show respect for their identity. People can choose to use a variety of pronouns.

Your initial response should be a well developed original paragraph, reflecting on the prompt above. You cannot present ideas taken directly from outside sources as if they were your own. That is considered to be “cut and paste”, a form of plagiarism, activity that will not be accepted. Bring in your own ideas to this discussion! If you are quoting a summarized idea from an article or video, make sure you document your sources. You may use phrases such as “according to the article —-(mention the article or author you refer to)—- “and then summarize the idea you are bringing to your writing.
Reply to at least two classmates’ posts. Your response to your classmate’s post should be well developed and add to the discussion (i.e. reflecting on their response, asking questions, etc.)
