Public Assistance Program

Description

Applying for social services can be a complex process, full of paperwork and interviews. And, as you have already learned, it can be stigmatizing. Future social workers must understand the procedures involved with applying for social services, so they can better relate to and advocate for their clients.
With this goal of understanding in mind, for this Assignment, you take on the role of someone seeking public assistance as you complete application paperwork. You then reflect on the application process and any associated threats to self-worth, dignity, and accessibility.
To prepare:
Review the Learning Resources on how poverty is measured and how means tests work.
Acquire an application for a public assistance program.
You can do this by visiting an agency or government office in your area that offers public assistance, or by searching online through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Fill out the application as if you were requesting assistance. (Note: Do not actually submit the application.)
