Name of Speech: What are you really eating?
Specific Purpose of Speech: To inform the audience about food safety.
Please note that you are committed to this topic. You should have already submitted the topic form to the discussion area. So,
this is your last chance to change it. You may not change your topic after you submit this form. Failure to submit this form by
the due date will lessen your chances of maximizing your points on the speech.
Find three (3) high-level scholarly peer-reviewed journals in a college library database (e.g., Lonestar College library or
another university) on the subject of the speech. See the document on How to Find High-Level sources in LoneStar Library
Database. Make sure they are not more than 10 years old. For example, in 2023 you will have sources that are published in the
year 2013 to 2023. You can have government websites, magazines, newspapers for your “ADDITIONAL” SOURCES, but
they will not satisfy the requirement for the MINIMUM NUMBER OF SOURCES REQUIRED.
Attach a sheet with a complete “References Sheet” with your 3 (three sources) in APA 7.0 style at the END after the
Mini outline. Use website purdueowl.com for help with citations. The How To…document referenced above is your BEST
instructions for the Reference Sheet.
Sources
Source 1 Name of Article and Author(s): Sweetener food additives: a synoptical overview on their
chemical properties, applications in food products and side effects. Written by Manuela Silva,
Henrique Reboredo and Cebola Lidon.
Why will this source be useful for your speech? Be specific.
It shows that even if a product is sugar-free it isn’t a healthier alternative. I want to inform my audience
of the health risks of the things they are consuming. It also shows the side effects of the chemicals that
are replacing the sugar.
Why will your audience find this to be a credible source?
The article includes the structural formulas of the chemicals that they mention. They name many
different additives and how they affect the body. The last three pages are full of references.
Source 2 Name of Article and Author(s): Consumption of ultra-processed foods and low dietary
diversity are associated with sedentary and unhealthy eating behaviors: A nationwide study
with Brazilian Schoolchildren. Written by Oliveira, Santos Gonçalves, Nakano, and Toral.
Why will this source be useful for your speech? Be specific.
It has studies of children talking about their eating habits. It shows how people choose junk food that is
hard for our bodies to process. It also talks about how screens play into our diet habits and health. I can
use this source to show why we should avoid certain behaviors while eating.
Why will your audience find this to be a credible source?
My source has the test results in their article showing the kid’s unhealthy eating habits. On the last two
pages, they also have 56 references so I can trust their facts.
Source 3 Name of Article and Author(s): Evaluating adverse effects of environmental agents in food:
a brief critique of the US FDA’s criteria. Vandenberg, Zoeller, Prins, and Trasande.
Why will this source be useful for your speech? Be specific.
This journal critiques the FDA, which is the administration that should keep our food safe to eat. It talks
about the FDA’s flaws and what needs to happen to be considered an adverse effect. The article shows
that the FDA’s criteria for identifying adverse effects aren’t good enough because they are not science-
based.
Why will your audience find this to be a credible source?
The article has forty-two references. The article also uses specific examples to prove the point they are
making. It also mentions big companies such as the CDC.

Mini Outline for Speeches
MUST BE TYPED
Title of Speech: It is in your best interest to ask yourself this question: What are you really eating?
Specific Purpose: To inform audience of harmful foods we are eating
Speaker/Student Name: First Name Last Name
Thesis Statement: The food we are consuming is causing sickness because of what is in it, as well as the
amount we are consuming.
Introduction
I. Attracting attention to the topic with an Attention-getting statement: Attention-getter.
There is a very good chance that diseases are in your future. It is up to you to lessen that
chance and I am going to tell you how.
Body
(The Transition statement shows moving from one step to the next.) What you choose to consume is
important, and what you do while eating also has an effect.
(Transition-statement show moving from one step to the next) All these processed foods are terrible, but
don’t think the FDA will save you.
(Transition-statement to the CONCLUSION) From my previous points, you can have an idea of how the
foods we consume can seriously damage our bodies. Do your investigation and homework.
I. Main point 1 – Sugar-free doesn’t mean chemical free. (Manuela Silva, Henrique Reboredo and Cebola
Lidon, 2023)
A. The rise in sugar-free products have developed because of increase in obesity rates.
B. The natural sugar is being replaced by chemicals, which are even worse for our bodies.
II. Main point 2 – It is vital that you pay attention to how much food and what you are eating. (Oliveira,
Santos Gonçalves, Nakano, and Toral, 2024)
A. The study shows that kids often eat processed foods which is hard on their developing
bodies.
B. Too much screen time while eating can have negative effects.
III. Main point 3 – The FDA doesn’t completely ban harmful agents in food. (Vandenberg, Zoeller,
Prins, and Trasande, 2023)
A. The FDA requires the chemicals in food to cause a reaction in both sexes for it
to be important and require notification of harmful effects.
B. The adverse effects must be irreversible for the chemical to be a problem.
Conclusion
Thesis Statement REPEATED EXACTLY FROM ABOVE: Our food choices today may hurt us in the long
run.
I. Summary Statement referring back to the introduction and initial statements. Harmful foods are all
around us. Grocery stores are filled with awful foods that are slowly killing you. It is important to watch the
amount you eat instead of the TV. Poor food choices will have their consequences.
II. Closure Statement (why you chose this topic and & what we are to take from it)
It was important to me that I inform people about our food intake as it affects everybody. We all must eat to
live, next time you’re looking for something to snack on, remember your choice of snack can hurt you.Thesis
