Description
As the HIM director of a large medical center, you are part of the strategic planning committee. The committee is represented by clinicians, information technology, executive leadership, and administrative and financial services. Part of the strategic goals for the hospital is to implement an electronic health record, to improve accessibility and quality of healthcare. Your hospital still maintains a paper medical record, although it has several systems throughout the hospital that could directly feed into an EHR. The efficiencies that can be achieved in the HIM department alone are abundant if the EHR can interface directly to the dictation and transcription system, coding, ROI, and chart completion systems. In developing the criteria for selecting a vendor, it is important to identify benefits and efficiencies the hospital expect to achieve from an EHR. The hospital would like to start an implementation by June 1, 2021.
Assignment Instructions
For the next meeting, you have been asked to present the benefits and strategic roadmap for implementing an EHR in your department. As part of your presentation, you will include a Gantt chart to outline a proposed implementation plan.

Content (at least 6 slides)
Identify benefits to be achieved to help in justifying the EHR for the hospital.
Explain the benefits that can be achieved with the implementation of an EHR for the HIM department
Explain the benefits that might impact the delivery of patient care.
Create a Gantt chart to include the implementation plan. At a minimum, include:
A list of tasks to complete
The date each task must start
The date for the completion of each task
Estimated number of hours to complete each task
Any predecessors that apply
Research and compare implementation plan to a hospital of similar size. Discuss the results.
Develop a visual strategic roadmap to implementation in HIM.
Summarize the concept of your roadmap.
