Keystone Assessment – Persuasive Speech

Instructions: Please make sure it is in a powerpoint
Students must deliver a persuasive speech aimed at convincing their audience to consider their stance on a particular issue or argument. The speech must be in length. Additionally, students must provide a written outline for their speech.
Topic Selection: Obesity
Research: Conduct research on your topic using library databases to find evidence (e.g., explanations, examples, illustrations, statistics, analogies, quotations from relevant authorities) to support your position.
Development: Use the persuasive speech worksheet and outline to develop your speech.

Academic Sources: Include at least 5 academic sources from the LIRN database to support your position.
Evaluation Criteria:
Central Message: The main point/thesis/”bottom line”/”take-away” of your presentation. A clear central message is easy to identify; a compelling central message is also vivid and memorable.
Delivery Techniques: Posture, gestures, eye contact, and use of voice. Effective delivery techniques include standing and moving with authority, maintaining frequent eye contact with the audience, using an expressive voice, and minimizing vocal fillers (“um,” “uh,” “like,” “you know,” etc.).

Language: Vocabulary, terminology, and sentence structure. Effective language is appropriate to the topic and audience, grammatical, clear, and free from bias. Enhanced language is also vivid, imaginative, and expressive.
Organization: The grouping and sequencing of ideas and supporting material in your presentation. A supportive organizational pattern typically includes an introduction, one or more identifiable sections in the body, and a conclusion. Enhanced organization reflects a purposeful choice among possible alternatives (e.g., chronological pattern, problem-solution pattern, analysis-of-parts pattern) to make the content easier to follow and more likely to accomplish its purpose.

Supporting Material: Outlines, explanations, examples, illustrations, statistics, analogies, quotations from relevant authorities, and other information or analysis that supports the principal ideas of the presentation. Generally credible supporting material is relevant and derived from reliable sources. Highly credible supporting material is vivid and varied across types (e.g., a mix of examples, statistics, references to authorities) and helps establish the speaker’s credibility.
