Case Study 1
Impairment of a Fellow Social Worker
As a social work field student in the addictions field at the Department of Mental Health (DMH), you are highly motivated, intelligent and get along with fellow colleagues, supervisors, and clients. Recently, a fellow social worker, Jared told you in confidence that he thought another social worker, Terry, had a substance abuse problem. Because you were known to have worked for several years as a paraprofessional at a substance abuse facility, Jared felt that you were the best person to approach rather than another colleague or supervisor that he does not get a great vibe from (even stating he does not know if anyone else is trustworthy). You asked Jared how he had come to that conclusion. He stated that he noticed that Terry had missed too many days from work, often seems forgetful, does not turn work (such as notes and treatment plans) in on time, misses meetings, does not work in a group productively and is, in general, very “on edge.” Despite the fact that you are a field student and not yet a professional social work practitioner, you still understand that MSW students have a responsibility to live up to the standards set forth by the NASW Code of Ethics. You deliberate your obligations, responsibilities to the profession, to future clients of Terry, the Department of Mental Health (DMH), Limestone University, and to your fellow colleague Jared. What do you do?
